Open Submissions for “DRAWN Out”: the LGBTQ+ Coming Out Comics Anthology!

It’s one of the scariest/happiest things a queer person can do: come out. Whether bad or good, funny or dramatic, it usually makes for an interesting story, and we want to hear those stories.

Drawn OUT is a comic book anthology of nonfictional coming out stories, and we are looking for submissions. We’re looking for 1-6 page stories in sequential art (comic) form, that revolve around coming out as any form of gender/sexual minority. We want to see the full spectrum, and we will be making sure as many identities are represented as possible.

From now through March 31st (2012), we’ll be accepting proposals. Proposals should include:

  • Name (and pseudonym if you don’t want to publish under your real name)
  • Summary of the story you’ll be telling
  • Sample of the art
  • Estimated number of pages

Don’t send completed pages. We don’t want you to do a bunch of hard work without knowing if it’ll get in the book. This is just the proposal stage. If you’re not an artist, you can find an artist to draw your story for you. Do this before you submit your proposal.

Once the submission period ends, editors Kate and Megan will figure out which stories we want to use. We will then contact you and then you can start working on your comic pages. You’ll have until September 30th to turn it in.

We are in talks with publishers, and it will most likely be in full color! We’ll be doing a kickstarter/indiegogo thing to fund it, with 100% of the funds going towards printing as many books as we can, and paying the people whose work is in it. (Payment has not been determined yet, but we’re making sure you get something for your effort.) We will be giving away many copies to schools and libraries, making sure these stories can be accessed by queer people (especially younger ones).
